Owen Hazle

I build great products, and the internal tools that run the businesses behind them.

About

I like turning a rough idea into something people use every day.

I have been building websites for more than ten years, and products and internal tools grew out of that. I work across the whole thing: the idea, the design, the build, the launch and everything after. Some of it is public, like an app people open every morning. Some of it only a team ever sees, like the tool they run their day on. I care about both the same way.

Thinking

  1. Reach amplifies a great product. It cannot save a mediocre one.

An audience gets a product seen. Only the product makes people stay.

  2. Internal tools are products too.

The team using a tool all day deserves the same care as a paying customer.

  3. Build the software around the business.

Off-the-shelf tools get you started. A tool shaped to how the team works makes it faster.

  4. Simple is the hard part.

Every screen, field and step has to earn its place.

  5. Launch is the start.

The real product shows up in what people do with it, so the work carries on after release.

  6. Trust is a feature.

Speed, privacy and security are part of what people experience.

Security

People trust these products with payments, health data and personal details. Protecting that is part of the build.

I build platforms to SOC 2 and ISO 27001 controls, and sites that stay up under heavy traffic.

  1. SOC 2

Platforms built to the SOC 2 trust criteria: access control, audit logging, encryption and change control.

  2. ISO 27001

Risk assessment, least privilege access and documented controls that map to ISO 27001.

  3. High-traffic sites

Caching, rate limits and queues so launch days and ad spikes do not take a site down.

  4. Payments that fail closed

Payment webhooks are signature-checked and refuse everything when a secret is missing.

  5. Privacy by design

Account deletion that erases the data. Health and journal entries stay out of analytics.

  6. Review before launch

An adversarial review before release. Findings are fixed or signed off as accepted risk.
